Interesting articles from around the web

Articles about Zambia and Africa from around the world, focusing on the development and positive aspects of our beautiful continent. Know of an interesting article relevant for a Zambian audience? Submit it below.

  • Start-up snapshot

We hope How We Made It In Africa’s list of start-ups across Africa will serve to inspire more young start-ups in Zambia and Africa. Interestingly, the majority of these start-up stories are related to apps or doing something better via the internet. However, we scooted through four pages of this start-up snapshot archive and there is not a single Zambian start-up listed :-( Are Zambian start-ups not keeping up with countries like Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and South Africa, who are constantly featured, or are we just not as good at PR? Get some motivation from the list please! Read the full article.

  • Emirates’ eyes fastened on Africa – an ‘underserved’ air transport market and FastJet says African expansion held back by protectionism

Many would welcome more flights to and from Zambia (especially direct ones). So it’s refreshing to read about the interest companies like Emirates and FastJet have in launching and expanding services in Zambia and Africa. At the same time it is frustrating to read about the limitations that are in place to protect existing carriers. We hope business leaders like Ed Winter, CEO of FastJet, continue to try and influence the airline industry for the better.

  • Zambians gaining confidence in elections as tools for accountability

Afro Barometer published this interesting data about how Zambians feel about elections: “Almost six of ten Zambians say elections enable voters to remove leaders who do not do what the people want – almost twice the proportion who held this view in 2005. A majority say elections ensure that MPs reflect the views of voters – again a substantial increase from previous surveys. And more than three-fourths say the most recent national elections, in 2011, were “completely free and fair” or “free and fair, but with minor problems.” Despite these positive assessments, substantial proportions of the population say that at least “sometimes”, Zambian elections are plagued by intimidation and bribery of voters and unfair counting of votes.” Read the full article.

Celebrating local Zambian talent

Last week we featured Chair of the Zambian Fashion Council Angelika Huwiler. As we’re launching our new Events section this month, we’re turning our attention to talent involved in events in Zambia. Now, we’re pretty sure that most Zambians will have heard of The Pompi! So although he is a multi-award winning Zambian artist with two successful albums under his belt (Mizu and Broken English), we’d like to highlight The Pompi’s other work in events. The Pompi is also CEO of Atmosphere Entertainment, which also promotes other Zambian artists: CrazyfisH, Flow1ne and Musubila. The Pompi is also involved in Lota House, which promotes even more Zambian artists: Abel Chungu, Seya, Magnum44 and Tio. The common theme – gospel music and a strong message presented professionally and fashionably.  Atmosphere Entertainment and Lota House seem to steadily organise a stream of professionally presented Zambian music events we continue to be proud of.
